Attention - calling all of Ireland's "Banished Babies"!

4th March 2011

The Irish Times reported on Friday 25th February that the Adoption Authority sent a delegation to the US in the previous week to discuss intercountry adoption.  The Irish State has yet to address the secret trafficking of over 2,000 Irish children to the US for adoption, who as adults are coming forward in droves, yet, in a bizarre twist; we are now in discussions with the US to arrange adoptions in reverse.

We believe that this is not only morally wrong but also in breach of Article 21 on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, given that there are obviously sufficient numbers of prospective adopters in the US, considering that America also adopts from overseas.  The Irish State is already in breach of Article 8 (1) of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child when it comes to Irish adopted people, yet it continues to extend its remit to other countries, which will only increase the numbers whose human rights are breached.

Ireland's "Banished Babies" are fighting back however and have begun a letter writing campaign to the Irish Adoption Authority.  Click here to download a MS Word version of the letter which you can personalise and send to the Adoption Authority.

“In all of us there is a hunger, marrow-deep, to know our heritage, to know who we are and where we have come from. Without this enriching knowledge, there is a hollow yearning . . . and the most disquieting loneliness."

Alex Haley, Author of Roots
