Russia puts Ireland on 'adoption blacklist'

breakingnews.ie 10/04/2010 - 08:36:17

Russia has placed Ireland on a new 'adoption blacklist' after diplomats said more than 50 families failed to provide post-placement reports on the welfare of the child they adopted.

Russia is tightening up controls on international adoptions following the deaths of several children around the world.

It is threatening to suspend all child adoptions by US families, after a young boy was sent back alone on a one-way flight to Moscow with a note saying he was violent and had severe psychological problems.

Torry Hansen, the adoptive mother of Russian boy Artyom Savelyev, 7, whom she called Justin Hansen, sent the boy back to Moscow from her home in Shelbyville, Tennessee.

“In all of us there is a hunger, marrow-deep, to know our heritage, to know who we are and where we have come from. Without this enriching knowledge, there is a hollow yearning . . . and the most disquieting loneliness."
