Adoption Oral History Project

Adoption Rights Alliance has begun the pilot phase of an oral history project which hopes to provide an opportunity to those who wish to tell their stories, with a view to raising awareness about the experience of the Irish adoption system. The project is as yet unfunded and has not yet applied for ethical approval however it is operating under the same strict ethical protocols as the Irish Research Council funded Magdalene Oral History Project conducted at University College Dublin.

We are interested in speaking to those with a connection to adoption in Ireland, including:

adopted people (including those illegally adopted and those sent to the US/elsewhere for adoption)

natural mothers (both those who spent time in mother and baby homes and those who did not)

other natural family members, including natural fathers and siblings

nurses/others who worked in mother and baby homes or other institutions (e.g. Temple Hill, Stamullen, St. Ritas)

adoption agency employees (including social workers, admin staff etc)

any others who may have information to offer (e.g. if you escorted a baby on a flight to the US or if you visited a mother and baby home)

If you are interested in taking part in the research contact us at research@adoptionrightsalliance.com

If you have already contacted us and are awaiting a response, we will get back to you as soon as possible - as we are conducting the project on a voluntary basis we may not be able to respond as quickly as we would like.  Thank you for your patience!

“In all of us there is a hunger, marrow-deep, to know our heritage, to know who we are and where we have come from. Without this enriching knowledge, there is a hollow yearning . . . and the most disquieting loneliness."
